Overview

What is orthopedic spine care?

Orthopedic spine care is the diagnosis and treatment of problems with the bones, discs, joints and nerves of the neck and back. It aims to relieve pain, protect nerve function and help you move freely again.

Chronic neck and back pain can affect your sleep, your work and your time with family. At FTG Ortho in Aventura, our spine specialists take a personalized, evidence-based approach, using on-site imaging to find the source of your symptoms.

Whether you have radiating nerve pain, stiffness or limited mobility, we offer non-surgical treatments first and minimally invasive spine procedures when conservative care is not enough.

02 / Conditions We Treat

Spine conditions we treat

Our orthopedic spine specialists treat a wide range of neck and back conditions, including:

Herniated and Bulging Discs

When the soft center of a spinal disc pushes out and irritates nearby nerves, causing back, neck, arm or leg pain.

Sciatica and Nerve Compression

Pain, numbness or tingling that travels from the lower back into the buttock and leg.

Spinal Stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause leg pain or heaviness when standing or walking.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Age-related wear of the spinal discs that may lead to stiffness and ongoing back or neck pain.

Spondylolisthesis

A vertebra that slips forward over the one below it, which can cause back pain and nerve symptoms.

Spine Injuries and Trauma

Spine-related injuries from falls, accidents, sports or work that need careful evaluation and treatment.

03 / Treatment Options

Spine treatment options

We begin with conservative care and move to surgery only when it is necessary.

Physical Therapy and Targeted Exercise

Exercises to strengthen your core, improve flexibility and posture, and reduce pressure on irritated nerves.

Spinal Injections and Nerve Blocks

Injections that may reduce inflammation and pain around irritated nerves, helping you stay active and progress in therapy.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Medications that may ease pain and swelling during a flare-up, used as part of a broader plan.

Posture and Activity Changes

Practical changes to how you sit, lift, work and exercise to protect your spine and prevent flare-ups.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

When needed: microdiscectomy, laminectomy and decompression, or minimally invasive spinal fusion to relieve nerve pressure or stabilize the spine.

FAQs

Spine Care FAQs

Answers to common questions about spine care at FTG Ortho in Aventura, FL.

Do I need surgery for a herniated disc?

Usually not. Many people with a herniated disc improve with non-surgical care such as rest, physical therapy, medication and sometimes spinal injections. Surgery, such as a microdiscectomy, may be considered when pain or nerve symptoms do not improve after a period of conservative treatment, or when there is significant weakness. Your FTG Ortho specialist will explain your options.

Sciatica is a symptom, while a herniated disc is one possible cause. Sciatica describes pain that travels along the sciatic nerve from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. It is often caused by a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root, but spinal stenosis and other conditions can cause it too.

Seek emergency care right away if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, sudden or worsening leg weakness, fever, or follows a serious fall or accident. These can be signs of a serious problem. For pain without these warning signs, schedule an evaluation with a spine specialist.

Minimally invasive spine surgery uses smaller incisions and specialized instruments to treat the spine with less disruption to surrounding muscle than traditional open surgery. Procedures such as microdiscectomy, decompression and some spinal fusions can be performed this way. Whether it is right for you depends on your condition, anatomy and overall health.

They may. Spinal injections, such as epidural steroid injections and nerve blocks, can reduce inflammation around irritated nerves and ease pain for some patients. Relief varies from person to person and may be temporary. Injections often work best alongside physical therapy and activity changes, and some are also used to help pinpoint the source of pain.
